BIPOLAR DISORDER
Also known as Bipolar depression or Bipolar Mood Disorder. (Not Spelled Bipoler as some may think). Unfortunately bipolar spectrum disorders often go unrecognised and undiagnosed. This is largely due to the wide range of symptoms:
- Impulsive behaviour
- Alcohol and substance abuse
- Fluctuations in energy level
- Legal problems
This make Bipolar Disorder more difficult to recognised because these symptoms are often attributed to problems other than bipolar disorder.
One method of increasing recognition is to screen for it with The Mood Disorder Questionnaire.
This Questionnaire is a brief, easy-to-use screening instrument for bipolar disorder. It screens a lifetime history of a manic or hypo-manic syndrome by including 15 questions derived from both the DSM IV and clinical experience that needs to be completed by the patient.A Screening score of 14 or more indicates a high specificity and sensitivity for Bipolar Disorder
